Altitude Sickness in Western Sichuan: How to Plan Around It

Updated 2026-11-08 · 9 min read · Chengdu Overseas Tourism Co., Ltd. (L-SC-CJ00011)
Short answer: most nights in Western Sichuan sit between 3,000 and 4,000 m, so mild AMS is common but manageable. The fix is pacing — step the route up over 2–3 days, sleep in valleys, keep summit days to the end — plus hydration, no alcohol early, and a doctor's advice about acetazolamide if you are doing the full Yading run.

How to pace a route upward

What altitude sickness feels like

Mild acute mountain sickness (AMS) — headache, poor sleep, queasy appetite — is common above 3,000 m and usually settles in 24–48 hours. Warning signs that demand descent and medical attention: worsening headache that ignores painkillers, vomiting, breathlessness at rest, confusion or a stumbling gait. Oxygen bottles are sold at every town pharmacy; serious cases go to county hospitals, which all handle AMS routinely.

Field note — The single best insurance is itinerary design. Our Yading routes sleep at Daocheng two nights before the park and never push a first-timer above 4,700 m without an easy exit — ask for the altitude plan when you enquire.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get altitude sickness in Western Sichuan?

Above 3,000 m, mild symptoms (headache, restless sleep) are common and usually settle within a day or two. Serious AMS is rare when routes pace upward properly.

Do I need oxygen?

Not to carry continuously — bottles are cheap in town pharmacies and useful for headaches. Overnight oxygen in hotels is available in Daocheng and Litang.

Is Yading safe for first-timers?

Yes, with pacing: sleep two nights at ~3,800 m before walking the 4,700 m boardwalk, take it slowly, and descend if symptoms worsen.
