Chongqing: the Mountain City Next Door to Sichuan
Why Chongqing pairs so well with a Sichuan trip
Chongqing (重庆) is a direct-administered municipality, not part of Sichuan — but on the ground it is West China's second gateway: the eastern anchor of the Chengdu–Chongqing economic corridor, 75 minutes to 2 hours from Chengdu by high-speed rail, and reachable by air from almost anywhere. If Sichuan is your mountains, Chongqing is your megacity finale: neon stacked on hills, stair streets that go nowhere horizontally, and hotpot that tastes like a dare.
Most international visitors use it in one of two ways: a 1–2 day city add-on after a Sichuan loop, or a full “mountain city + Wulong” week that stands on its own. Both work; the second is the underrated one.
The headline sights
| Sight | What it is | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Hongyadong 洪崖洞 | Eleven storeys of stilt-house style shops and restaurants glowing over the Jialing river — go after dark | 2–3 hrs |
| Liziba 李子坝 | The monorail that passes through an apartment block; the viewing deck below is half the fun | 1 hr |
| Ciqikou 磁器口 | Ming-Qing porcelain-port old town: tea houses, chilli-oil smells, river steps | 2–3 hrs |
| Dazu Rock Carvings 大足石刻 | UNESCO grottoes, 75 min away — thousand-year-old painted Buddhist sculpture, best of its era | Full day |
| Wulong 武隆 | Three Natural Bridges karst arches + Longshuixia gorge + Fairy Mountain meadows, UNESCO listed | 1–2 days |
| Two-river night cruise | The skyline from the water — worth it once | 1.5 hrs |
A 5-day Chongqing + Wulong route

The same loop runs in reverse from Chengdu, and couples naturally with the plateau itineraries in this guide: fly into Chengdu, finish on the plateau, high-speed rail east, fly out of Chongqing — no backtracking, two great cities, one trip.
Practicalities
- Real-name tickets apply here too — Dazu and Wulong sell under your passport details, same rule as Sichuan's parks.
- Terrain is the itinerary: Chongqing is stairs, bridges and tunnel walkways; pack shoes that can climb and a hotel chosen for location, not price.
- Chongqing hotpot comes in a butter-red split pot; the mild half is genuinely mild — order 微辣 (wēi là, “micro-spicy”) if unsure.
- High-speed rail Chengdu East ↔ Chongqing North/Shapingba: 62–90 min, dozens daily; book with passport at 12306 or via an operator.

Frequently asked questions
Is Chongqing part of Sichuan?
No — it has been a directly-administered municipality since 1997. Culturally and logistically it belongs to the same greater-southwest circuit, and it needs no special permit beyond your China visa or visa-free entry.
How many days should I give Chongqing?
Two for the city itself; four to five if you add Wulong's karst parks and the Dazu grottoes, which are the actual UNESCO-heavyweight sights of the region.
Can I combine Chongqing and Western Sichuan in one trip?
Yes, and it is the smart shape: fly into one city and out of the other, with the plateau loop in between. The operator page lists ready-made 5-day mountain-city itineraries that slot against the 7-day Yading run.
