Jiuzhaigou or Western Sichuan — Which One Is for You?
Two different trips
| Jiuzhaigou (+ Huanglong) | Western Sichuan (G318 / Yading) | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Fly or rail in, walk boardwalks, hotel nights in towns | Road journey: passes, grasslands, valley towns |
| Effort | Low — shuttle + boardwalk | Moderate — long drives, real altitude, optional hikes |
| Scenery style | Water: lakes, cascades, travertine in forest | Mountains: holy peaks, grasslands, monasteries |
| Altitude | 2,000–3,500 m, gentle | 3,000–4,700 m, real |
| Comfort | High — even 2-day itineraries feel soft | Variable — guesthouse to five-diamond, choose your tier |
| Best for | First China trip, families, limited time | Second-timers, photographers, the plateau-curious |
Why the “versus” is a false choice
The two sit at opposite ends of the province but share the same backbone road. Our most-loved itineraries join them: Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong first — gentle altitude, water scenery — then west over the plateau to Xinduqiao, Tagong and Yading. Six to eight days does both without rushing; the altitude ladder even works in your favour, rising gradually from Jiuzhaigou's 2,000 m.
A decision rule
- First visit to China / under 5 days: Jiuzhaigou + Huanglong, by rail if you can — the new high-speed line from Chengdu makes it a 3-day trip.
- Plateau is the point / 7+ days: the western route to Yading.
- Week-plus and undecided: the combined loop — it is genuinely our most-booked family of itineraries.

Frequently asked questions
Is Jiuzhaigou part of Western Sichuan?
It sits in Ngawa (Aba) prefecture, so yes — it is the northern gateway of the Tibetan areas of Sichuan, though the park experience itself is boardwalk sightseeing rather than plateau travel.
Can I see both Jiuzhaigou and Yading in one trip?
Yes — 6–8 days joins them comfortably via the plateau corridor, with altitude rising gently from Jiuzhaigou's 2,000 m to Yading's 4,000 m.
Which is better for kids or older parents?
Jiuzhaigou: shuttle buses and flat boardwalks, milder altitude, hotel comfort. Western Sichuan's long drives suit tougher travellers.
